Mrs. and Fire Island Artist Residency recently closed a benefit suite of 13 unique works by artist Damien Davis. Together they raised over $30,000 from the sales of  new sculptures that went directly to a selection of thirteen organizations committed to the amplification of Black voices within art, design, culture and social justice. Davis’ practice seeks to unpack the visual language of Black cultures, questioning how we code/decode/recode representations of race through craft, design and digital modes of production. For this fundraiser, Davis chose to deepen his exploration of the formal possibilities of his iconic “Black power button pick,” a riff on the iconic Black fist Afro comb, an evocative symbol of Black pride that rose to prominence in the second half of the twentieth century.

This summer Dio Horia opened their sister project Dio Horia 2 Shop. They host a treasure trove of artist objects, prints and goodies ready to be shipped world wide. Featured above is Greek artist Potatti Pottato (aka Pots by Tato). Potatti expresses her love of quirky but useful things made out of glazed earthenware. In this ceramic plate (that looks like a fried egg and is named 'Oh, My Ovaries') and in her work in general, the artist aims to depict things that are not objectively funny but somehow, make you smile.

Walk The Air a new body of work by David Shrobe opens at Steve Turner Gallery July 25

Artist David Shrobe presents a new body of work inspired by the solemnity of the past few months, his family and the Black Lives Matter movement.

DAVID SHROBE
WALK THE AIR
July 25–August 29, 2020

Steve Turner presents Walk the Air, a solo exhibition by New York-based David Shrobe that features new assemblage paintings that were made in the last several months.

By combining found and repurposed materials with the photographic history of African Americans, Shrobe produces new narratives that feel intimate and personal without being anchored to a specific time or place. Shrobe explains that Walk the Air alludes to the African American folkloric secret language of flight.  In these works, he more sharply focuses on his family and the sanctity of that bond during a time of pain, tumult and struggle. This is evident in At A Crossroads, where a mother, father and infant child contemplate the direction they will take while finding solace in each other.

Nicasio Fernandez, How Can I Tell You?

How Can I Tell You? a solo exhibit by Nicasio Fernandez recently opened at Ross + Kramer’s East Hampton space.

The exhibition showcases a body of work by Nicasio Fernandez that presents visual representations for the emotional uncertainty that reigns in our current day to day. Featuring new works on linen and canvas, How Can I Tell You? is the painter’s first exhibition with the gallery, Fernandez continues his exploration of how the human figure can take form, whether that be through heads occupying the shapes of objects, artificial skin tones, or overextended, blown-up arms and appendages. New to the painter, and new to his audience, is the visual and emotional isolation of these figures in their individual environments. Left to their own thoughts, human-like beings exude concern in their anxious body gestures and facial expressions.

Karlheinz Weinberger, Together & Alone

SITUATIONS presents Together & Alone; a selection of vintage photographs by Zürich photographer Karlheinz Weinberger (1921-2006), opening on August 1st. The exhibition pairs images of Weinberger’s most famous subjects, the “Halbstarke,” a loosely organized group of Swiss “rebels” in the late 1950s and early 1960s, carousing at local carnivals and on a camping trip, with a much more private side of Weinberger’s oeuvre: solo portraits of men from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s whom he invited into his makeshift studio in the rooms of the apartment he shared with his mother.

Daniel Spoerri,
Happy Birthday Mr Spoerri!

Happy Birthday Mr Spoerri! celebrates Romanian artist, Daniel Spoerri’s 90th birthday at Galerie Anne Barrault. The visitor will discover 9 works, like 9 candles. These works, achieved at various times, punctuate the career of this great artist through today. A contemporary and friend of artists Jean Tinguely and Eva Aeppli, Spoerri’s work, exhibitions or banquets focus the gaze, but we must also navigate in between, in the silences that give words their weights, in the emotion that colours meetings, and in the friendship that gives substance to artistic dialogues.

Noel W. Anderson

Noel W. Anderson is known for his explorations into the evolving makeup of black male identity as seen through the lens of American media. Using a variety of materials, predominantly textiles and experimental printmaking processes, the source images are heavily manipulated—blown up, warped and distorted, limbs bending into unrealistic postures, as though the images are transforming right before our eyes.

Noel’s show opens on Saturday, August 29 in conjunction with Upstate Art Weekend. The gallery is open 12-5pm Saturday and Sunday (8/29 & 8/30) and by appointment.

Mother Gallery is participating August 29 & 30, 2020 in the Upstate Art Weekend. It will be your last chance to view “Mother Altar” a site-specific group exhibition, a time capsule and a placeholder for our intentions and contributions—helping us to experience some agency and community as we move ahead in this time of pain, uncertainty and hope. “Mother Altar” is organized by artist Chie Fueki. Over the last 3 months the gallery has received over 100 contributions for “Mother Altar.” Many of the contributions that we have received for the altar reference aspects of life under the pandemic, some are political in nature, others have personal meaning, and some were made in reaction to George Floyd’s murder.

Mother Gallery will be open on Saturday, August 29 from 5 - 9pm and Sunday, August 30 from noon to 9pm in Beacon, NY.
