BEERS London brings together works by Haitian-American artist Milo Matthieu and British artist Adebayo Bolaji for the 2020 debut edition of Future Fair.
MILO MATTHIEU
The young, Brooklyn-based artist Milo Matthieu uses his work to explore Haiti’s recent experiences with economic tragedy, political upheaval, and environmental crisis. Haiti - “Les Pays Maudit”, is a phrase his grandfather often used: meaning literally the cursed country. Striking in both colour and composition, Matthieu’s works are collages built with layers of paint and paper. Originally trained as a photographer, his works function like constructed montages of a scene; building scenes from a process that likens semiotic theory, with painterly practice.
ADÉBAYO BOLAJI
Adébayo Bolaji, is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in London, England. At the centre of his practice is the dialogue of change and the focus of the individual within a connecting society whether that be anthropological, religious, historical or popular culture. The use of the vibrant and metaphorical language, is a crucial element in his work, helping to narrate a different story within each painting allowing for the viewer to take an active role in the works. Bolaji has exhibited internationally in London and Zurich, with artist residencies in New York and Margate, including an Artist Residency with Yinka Shonibare MBE Guest Projects.
Since 2012, BEERS London has rapidly forged an international reputation for itself as one of London’s lead, forward-thinking gallery spaces. The gallery works with both emerging and mid-career artists to present an exhibition programme that is dedicated to the exploration of diverse thematic, aesthetic, and political concepts, while highlighting an approach to contemporary art that is both progressive and thought-provoking. In 2016, the gallery – owned and operated by Canadian Kurt Beers – began to shift its focus to represent its Canadian identity; today the gallery maintains a roster of artists that includes leading Canadian contemporary artists like Kim Dorland, Kathryn MacNaughton, Andy Dixon and Andrew Salgado.
